Type locality: Brazil, Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Munícipio de Saquarema, temporary pool in the Catimbau river floodplains, about 1.5 km S of the road RJ-106, Saquarema lagoon system, 22°51'53"S, 42°33'15"W [1].
Etymology: Specific epithet is the Latin word vermiculatus (vermiculated = ornated wormlike or worm-eaten grooves), given in reference to the colour pattern of the caudal fin in males.
