Type locality: Brazil: Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul: Município de Bodoquena: temporary pool about 18 km W of the village of Bodoquena, road MS-339, Salobra river fl oodplains, Miranda river drainage, Paraguay river basin, 20°29’42”S 56°48’37”W, altitude about 170 m; a.s.l.

Etymology: The specific name rubrofasciatus is from the Latin rubrofasciatus (= with red stripes), referring to the red stripes on the caudal peduncle and anal-fin base in males.
