Type locality: Brazil: Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul: Município de Aquidauana: temporary pool about 15 km NW of the town of Aquidauana, road MS-170, Aquidauana river floodplains, Paraguay river basin, 20°19’14”S 55°50’36”W, altitude about 135 m a.s.l.

Etymology: The specific name aureomaculatus is from the Latin aureomaculatus (= with golden spots), an allusion to the presence of numerous golden spots on the flank in males.
