Type locality: Balé Creek, 0°31'09"N, 12°47'58"E [1], Ivindo River drainage, Ogooué-Ivindo Province, Gabon.
Etymology: The specific name is from the Latin armatus (= armed), in allusion to the antrorse (distally directed) and retrorse (proximally directed) serrations on the anterior edge of the pectoral spine unique to this species.
