Type locality: Akademik Kurchatov, cruise 17 (AK17), January 24, 1974, station 1456, 0°02′ S, 122°04′ W, depth of site 4440 m, trawling depth 300–0 m.
Etymology: Specific epithet succedaneus is translated from Latin into Russian as “replacing,” which indicates that it replaces in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean closely related species of the complex Melamphaes longivelis from the Indian Ocean and western part of the Pacific Ocean.
