Type locality: Kishira, Kimotsuki, Uchinoura Bay, Kagoshima, Japan, 31°11’26” N, 131°00’3” E.
Etymology: named xanthopinnis (Latin: “yellow-finned”) with reference to the prominent yellow fins of this species.
