Holotype: CMFRI GB.31.139.31.1. Paratypes (3): CMFRI GB.31.139.31.1; CSIRO H 7218–02; MZB LM648.

Type locality: Arabian Sea, southwestern India, Kerala State, Kochi Fisheries Harbor, gillnetted off Mangalore.[1]

Etymology: The species is named in honour of John E. Randall, in recognition of his contribution to the taxonomy of tropical marine fishes and more specifically his contribution to the taxonomy of Liopropoma.
