Type locality: Brazil, Amazonas, Rio Negro watershed, Rio Cuieiras, Igarapé Cachoeira at Cachoeira Pedras dos Indios, field station A-294, [approximately 60 km NW of Manaus] [1].
Etymology: Leptophilypnion fittkaui is named in honour of Ernst Josef Fittkau (1927- 2012), advocate of Amerindian rights, conservationist, entomologist (Diptera, especially Chironomidae), and collector of the type specimens of this species.
