Holotype: MZUSP 106072. Paratypes: LBP 9214 (1); LISDEBE ? (1); MHNCI 12328 (1); NUP 5081 (1), 5082 (1), 5083 (1), 5084 (2), 5085 (1), 7518 (1), 7519 (1); ZSM 34136 (1).

Type locality: Brazil, Paraná State, rio Iguaçu, Salto Segredo reservoir, Municipality of Mangueirinha/Reserva do Iguaçu, 25º46’45"S, 52º07’00"W.

Etymology: The specific name nigropunctatus is a combination of the Latin nigrum for black, and the Latin punctum for point. It refers to the densely spotted head and trunk with fine black spots.
