Type locality: Brazil: Pará State: Itaituba Municipality, Pimental village, rio Amazonas basin: rio Tapajós, just downstream of mouth of rio Jamanxim; 4°33'41" S 56°15'50" W.

Etymology: The specific epithet, melanephelis, from the greek melanos meaning dark or black, and ephelis, meaning freckle, in allusion to the color pattern formed by tiny dark dots along the head and body.
