Hypostomus commersoni Valenciennes, 1836

Holotype (unique): MNHN A-9444 (dry). Valenciennes specimens and non-types: ?BMNH 1899.24.5.1 (1, dry), ?BMNH 1899.24.5.4-3 (2, dry); MNHN A-9443 (1), A-9445 (1), A-9563 (1). Type catalog: Bertin & Estève 1950:70.

Type locality: Uruguay, Montevideo, Río de La Plata.

Etymology: The specific name commersoni is dedicated to Philibert Commerson, a French naturalist, best known for accompanying Louis Antoine de Bougainville on his voyage of circumnavigation in 1766–1769.
