Lectotype: BMNH 1907.7.6.15. Paralectotypes: BMNH 1907.7.6.16 (1).
Type locality: Brazil, São Paulo, Rio Piracicaba.
Etymology: The specific name albopunctatus is a combination of the Latin albus for white, and the Latin punctum for point. It refers to the pale spots on head, trunk and fins.
