Type locality: Democratic Republic of Congo, Bandundu Province, Lokoro River drainage, Salonga National Park, Lui Kotale, 02°45'S, 20°22'E [1].
Etymology: The species name ndeko is the Lingala word for “sibling”, referring to the fact that the species is closely related to Hylopanchax leki of the right bank of the Lokoro river.
