Type locality: 35°28'S, 174°42'E [1], western side of Poor Knights Islands, New Zealand, 80 m depth.
Etymology: The specific name pyrhistion is a combination of the Greek words pyr (= fire), and histion (= sail), to recognise the colourful red and yellow patterned dorsal fin characteristic of this species.
