Gymnogeophagus mekinos Malabarba et al., 2015

  • Holotype: MCP 19296.
  • Paratypes: MCP 16119 (25), 9023 (24); UMMZ 225495 (10); MAPA 2190 (7); ZVCP 12958 (2); UFRGS 8396 (162), 7402 (26).

Type locality: Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, rio Piraizinho, on road from Bagé to Dom Pedrito, tributary of rio Negro, approximately 31°06’S, 54°07’W.

Etymology: From the Greek mekinos meaning prolonged, in reference to the comparatively elongated body of this species.
