Holotype: KPM-NI 5887. Paratypes: NSMT-P 106563 (ex KPM-NI; KPM-NI 5889.

Type locality: Funauki inlet, Iriomote-jima Island, Yaeyama Islands, the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, 5 m depth.

Etymology: The species is named after Richard Winterbottom, in honor of his great contribution to our knowledge of the systematics of the Gobioidei.
