Holotype: CAS 228572. Paratypes: BPBM 41001 (1); CAS 219785 (1), 228573 (1), 228574 (1), 228575 (1); ROM 60894 (1), 60895 (2), 84966 (1); USNM 396995 (1).
Type locality: Cobia Island, outside barrier reef, 16°27.333'S, 179°40.250'W, Fiji, depth 12–17 meters.
Etymology: named after U.S. ichthyologist John Ernest Randall.
