Type locality: Neches River, along right (west) bank just below Town Bluff dam, at Town Bluff, Tyler County, Texas.
Etymology: Etheostoma thompsoni was named in honor of Bruce Allen Thompson, in recognition of his intense interest in the systematics and biology of darters.
