Type locality: Samar Sea, Carigara Bay, Philippines, 11°55'42"N, 124°28'48"E to 11°53'48"N, 124°29'06", depth 0-86 meters.
Etymology: from Latin lateralis meaning lateral/side and fenestra meaning window, referring for its expansive transluscent lateral flank patch in males.
