Etymology: The specific epithet is ulbubunitj, for the Ulbu Bunidj clan in Arnhem Land, at the suggestion of senior Traditional Owner Jonathan Nadji. He stated: “My family’s clan area includes the area where this fish (goby threadfin) was discovered. Our clan, Ulbu Bunidj, shares this area with Djindibi. I would like this fish to be named after our clan, which is Ulbu Bunitj”.
