Diaphus prokofievi Taverne, 2015

  • Holotype: Ap 12a, b, both sides of a specimen of about 10 centimeters, comprising twenty vertebrae of the posterior portion of the body, with the caudal skeleton and parts of the caudal fin.
  • Paratypes: Ap 11, reduced cleithrum of a very small specimen, caudal skeleton and caudal fin.

Type locality: Santonian above marina Apricena, province Foggia, Gargano Promontory, Puglia, South Italy. The Santonian is dated 83-86.6 million years.

Etymology: The species name is dedicated to the Russian ichthyologist Artem M. Prokofiev, in tribute to his many papers treating fossil Myctophiformes from Russia and neighboring countries.
