- Holotype: AMNH R-109721; Myers, 1991: 8. Collected 9 February 1973 by Charles W. Myers and John W. Daly (field number C. W. Myers 11618).
- Type locality: Quebrada Guanguí, 0.5 km above Río Patia (upper Saija drainage), 100–200 m elevation, Cauca department, Colombia [about 02°50’N, 77°25’W].
- Etymology: Name derived from the Latin adjective prolixus meaning ‘‘stretched far out’’ or ‘‘long,’’ used especially in reference to parts of the body. The reference is to the unusually long hemipenis of this species compared with most other Dendrophidion.
