Type locality: Río San Alejandro, a tributary of Río Sungarayacu, just above junction with Río sungarayacu, about 9°23'S, 75°11'W [1], Provincia Pachitea, Huanuco, Peru.
Etymology: The species is named after the late Fonchii Chang (1963–1999) of the Museo de Historia Natural, Lima, "in recognition of her contributions to our understanding of Peruvian fishes and her assistance to the authors prior to her untimely death" The ETYFish Project.
