Type locality: Piti River, an affluent of the Rungwa River, eastern Lake Rukwa drainage, Mbeya Region, western Tanzania, 7°27'S, 33°25'E [1].
Etymology: The specific name is a combination of the Latin words tri (= three), and lobos (= lappet, lobe); it refers to the caudal fin of the species which has three lobes.
