- Holotype: CAS 60790.
- Paratypes: CAS 60791 (7 not 11), 60792-93 (11, 7); MNHN 1987-1623 (2); MRAC 76-32-P-2213-218 (3).
Type locality: High gradient stream along road from Mamfe to Bamenda [1], 88-94 kilometers southwest of Bamenda, Cross basin, Cameroon, western Africa.
Etymology: The specific epithet polypogon is a combination of the Greek words poly for multiple, and pogon for beard. It refers to the numerous mental barbels.
