Type locality: India: Tamil Nadu: Chembarampakkam Lake, 13°00'11" N 80°05'03" E.
Etymology: The species name is a compound noun, formed on the Greek macro (= large) and lepis (= scale), so named because it has larger scales than Chela atpar.
