Type locality: Brazil, Bahia, Prado, rio Ribeirão, on road between Cumuruxatiba and Corumbau, tributary of rio Cahy, 17°00’45”S, 39°12’07”W, 17 m above sea level.
Etymology: The specific name helmeri is given in honor of Dr. José Luis Helmer, who collected part of the material of the species, and in recognition of his pioneer studies on the natural history of the freshwater fishes in Espírito Santo and Southern Bahia, since 1976.
