Holotype: NMNH 5111 (adult male, 371 mm TL, 332 mm SL). Paratype: NMNH 5112 (12 adult specs: 7 males and 5 females, captured with holotype).
Type locality: Kerguelen Is, 47°44.4'S, 71°31.6'E, 10 August 1990, bottom trawl, depth 270-310 m, coll. G. A. Shandikov.
Etymology: The scientific name of the new species is derived from the Latin spelling of the name of the Pontic (Bosporus) Tzar Μιθριδατης – Mithridates, who ruled Panticapaeum (antique name of the city of Kerch). YugNIRO, in the city of Kerch, which has conducted Antarctic investigations for over 35 years, is located at the foot of a mountain named after Mithridates.
