Cercamia Randall & Smith, 1988

Type species: Cercamia cladara Randall & Smith, 1988

Etymology: Cercamia is from the Greek Kerkos, tail, and Amia, a Greek fish name that has been applied to apogonid fishes. This name alludes to the elongate tail resulting from the unique vertebral count with one fewer abdominal and one more caudal vertebrae than other cardinalfishes.
