Type locality: Ecuador, Guayas, Rio Bucay 3 km upstream from bride on Naranjal–Machala road, 79º42'31"W, 02º39'45"S [1], 80 m a.s.l.
Etymology: Bryconamericus bucayensis is named after the Rio Bucaya, where the type series was collected.
