  • Etymology: This species is named after Walter Heiligenberg (1938–1994) in honour of his discoveries in electric fish neurophysiology and behavior made at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. These notably include the "jamming avoidance response" in Eigenmannia, often described as the best-understood vertebrate behavior.
