Type locality: Thailand, Hat Yai, about 30 km south-west of Rattsphun, Bori Pat, at the national street 406, 150 m before the junction into the Bori Pat waterfall park (07º00’05 N, 100º08’55 E).

Etymology: The specific epithet ferox (Latin), meaning wild, bold, courageous, fierce, refers to the behaviour of the 'fighting fish'.
