Holotype: MPEG 21508. Paratypes: MPEG 21509 (1), FMNH 94418 (3).

Type locality: Brazil, Minas Gerais, Rio São Francisco system, Rio Piracutu basin, Município Buritizerio, Rio do Sono (17°18'S, 45°20'59"W).

Etymology: The species name orientalis is from the Latin for "of the east" refers to the presence of the species in the Rio São Francisco, the easternmost known occurrence of a species of Archolaemus.
