Holotype: LACM 31431, adult male.
Type locality: 60 km southeast of Maturín, Monagas, Venezuela.
Etymology: The name is derived from the Greek word panther, meaning cat, in reference to the leopard-like dorsal pattern exhibited by adults of this species.
