Type locality: Brazil, Mato Grosso, Santo Antônio do Leverger municipality, rio Cuiabá, 15°52'S 56°05'W.

Etymology: The epithet oviraptor is a combination of the Latin ovum (ovi), meaning egg; and raptor, a robber or plunderer, commonly used term for a predator, here referring to the peculiar dietary preferences observed in this species.
