Authority control tracking categories

edit

Hi,

Thanks for you good work with authority control on this project, please could you make the template emit separate categories, like "Category:Wikispecies articles with VIAF identifiers", as on en.Wikipedia? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:25, 26 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, yes I'm going to work on it when I find time. — T.seppelt (talk) 04:07, 28 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Authority control tags: taxa

edit

I don't see the value of adding these authority control tags to taxa - could there be a moratorium on adding them to taxa pages, until it has been better discussed, please? I've looked at some of the linked pages and they don't appear to offer anything useful to the WS project, as they are not taxonomic references. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:47, 26 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

It may be worth looking at en:Template:Taxonbar as an alternative. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:06, 27 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
It's not the formatting that's in question, but the principle of whether we should be promoting any or all of these external websites at all. I'm not greatly in favour of them; some at least are not exactly independent taxonomic organisations but are promoting their own agenda (e.g. tied to a particular national viewpoint), and many are woefully out-of-date and/or inaccurate. - MPF (talk) 11:23, 27 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

For now I'll only work on humans. Wikispecies is a special case in comparison to Wikipedia projects. It would be good to reach consensus on this question in order to have a general guideline. Somebody could start an RfC about this. – T.seppelt (talk) 04:06, 28 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
