Disputed validity/monophyly?
editAccording to Supplementary Material of {{Erwin et al., 2011}}
, Vendozoa/Vendobionta is controversial as a grouping for Ediacaran macrofossils, and they are now thought to consist of a number of groups (i.e. they are not a monophyletic group).
They instead proprose a new classification for Ediacaran macrofossils, recognising six clades (Rangeomorpha, Erniettomorpha, Dickinsoniomorpha, Arboreomorpha, Triradialomorpha, Kimberellomorpha), three likely clades (Bilaterialomorpha, Tetraradialomorpha, Pentaradialomorpha) and paraphyletic Porifera. Disputed affinity and rank
editThe affinity and rank of Vendobionta are also notably disputed. For example:
{{Seilacher, 1992}}
(which established the name "Vendobionta") considers them as a kingdom of their own.{{Buss & Seilacher, 1994}}
considers them instead as a phylum of Metazoa (= Animalia) and sister to the Eumetazoa.{{Seilacher, Grazhdankin & Leguta, 2003}}
and{{Seilacher, 2007}}
consider them a class of Rhizopoda.- Retallack, 2016 interprets them as likely lichenized fungi, but also discusses other affinities (Foraminifera, Algae, Animals, Microbial colonies). The author also suggests using class rank for the group.
