Name

Semilimax Gray, 1847

Type species: Vitrina elongata Draparnaud, 1805 (=Semilimax semilimax Férussac, 1802)

NOTE: First mentioned by Gray 1847, with type species given as Vitrina elongata, but mentioned only as a synonym of Vitrina. Under ICZN Article 11.6.1, a name originally published as a synonym can only be treated as available (and with the original date and authorship) if any subsequent authors treated it as available prior to 1961. Baker 1929 treated Semilimax Gray, 1847 as available, thereby making it retrospectively available under the ICZN, and attributed to Gray, 1847. Stabile in 1859 described Semilimax with the same type species (Vitrina elongata), but as Gray's name is available, and older, it renders Stabile's name a junior homonym and junior objective synonym.
