Type locality: Costa Rica, 8°13’42” N, 83°09’47” W, bottom trawl at depth 1157–1260 m.
Etymology: The species is named in honor of Peter Benchley, author of Jaws and subsequently an avid shark conservationist. His legacy, the Benchley Awards, recognizes outstanding achievements in ocean conservation.
