• Holotype: UALVP 44687, scale.

• Type locality and horizon: At 34.5 m, southern Read Bay section, east coast of cornwallis Island; upper part of Barlow Inlet Formation, Lower Lochkovian, Lower Devonian.

Etymology: From the Latin excelsus, meaning high, distinguished, because of scales with highest base and relatively high crown.
