- Holotype: NMNZ CR 3139, ♀.
- Type locality: Cliffs west of Davis Point, Perseverance Harbour, Campbell Island, S2°34'S 169°13'E, mat sponge with yellow tubes and overlying sediment from boulders, 23 m, J. K. Lowry, 7 February 1980, CA-276.
- Etymology: The specific name "pungapunga" is the Maori word meaning "yellow" and refers to the colour of the live animal.
