Welcome to Wikispecies!
Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:
- Help:Contents provides a good introduction to editing Wikispecies.
- Templates are there to help you to follow our syntax and formatting standards.
- Have a look at Done and to do.
If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.
If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.
Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome!
Hi. Please have a look a the help files on what to contribute and what not. E.g. distribution data has no place on Wikispecies. Also, if you add a taxon, also add name info (author, etc) and a reference (at least to the original publication of the taxon). Thanks Lycaon 09:19, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
- please stick to standard formatting rules, thanks Lycaon 23:20, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Formatting
editGood morning. Though we appreciate your contributions, could I please insist on you using the correct formatting and syntax. Unlike other wikipedias, Wikispecies adheres to a rather strict layout and structure. Do have a look at the help files and at other properly formatted pages (e.g. Dacrydium cupressinum, Lucanus cervus, Malacostraca, etc). Please reformat all the pages you have contributed accordingly. Thank you. Lycaon 09:34, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
- May I urge you one last time to stick to formatting rules as laid out in the help files . Thank you Lycaon 23:36, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Formatting and consistency
editHello there, thank you for your contributions. Please format your entries according to the guidleines available. We have almost 100,000 entries and we have tried very hard to discuss and come up with common formatting. If you disagree with something, by all means start a discussion at either Wikispecies:Village Pump or on the talk page of the particular Help section.
They may seem small and insigificant to you but it does make a difference to the project as a whole. That is not to say that we don't have articles that don't conform. We do, and plenty of them as we have changed formatting over time. However we don't expect to have to edit new articles for formatting. Look at your articles that have been edited for formatting to learn what is expected.
One example is the Vernacular names section. We have a template for creating this section. Please name the section appropriately and use the template. If you have questions on using the template let me know. Also see wikispecies:Templates.
A second example is linking to the authority in the name section. This should link to the authority on wikispecies. See Help:Name section.
Please don't hesitate to ask if you have questions. Open2universe 01:12, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
