User talk:Open2universe/February 2007
Welcome to Wikispecies and thanks for your openness! Regarding your concerns: I know that some poeple still think that wikispecies aims to be a bio-wikipedia, which is clearly not the purpose of this project; personally, I see it as a catalogue of taxa with references to other sources and very numeric data. To achieve that, all we need are users who make this happen. Looking forward to see some hummingbirds in here! Best, --Benedikt
- Welcome from me as well! You certainly are going full tilt. Excellent. However, do note some of the changes I've made to your articles. If you have questions, please don't be afraid to ask. - UtherSRG 02:01, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
Hummingbird pictures
editI noticed you're looking for useable hummingbird pictures - Wikimedia Commons will probably have some that will fit the bill quite nicely. They probably won't be associated with their binomial names, though. Bit of practice, perhaps? ;) - 220.237.30.150 03:34, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
What Wikispecies is not
editCheck out the Wikispecies:What Wikispecies is not page I created. Anything to add?? Feel free to add some things. 66.32.189.95 23:42, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
Admin?
editWould you like being an admin here? I think you're here long enough now and I see that you're regularly reverting vandalism.
I just read your user page - "Sagittaridae" is probably only based on an incorrect stem, so Sagittariidae is doubtlessly correct. I know some classifications have a difference between Accipitriformes (Accipitridae, Sagittariidae, Pandionidae) and Falconiformes (Falconidae), but I do not know if it's commonly accepted. Ucucha (talk) 18:59, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
language confusion
editI think you may have confused some interwiki prefixes on your colibry pages. I have noticed de: (German) when Dutch names (should be nl:) were featuring, and sw: (Swahili) when Swedish (sv:) names were showing. You may have to look into this. I only did a cursory check.
Moreover, a lot of those intewikis do not exist (yet). Current policy i.m.o. discourages this practice. — Lycaon 01:23, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry, to have assumed it was your mistake. I should have looked at the history. Late night is not always the best time to start commenting ;-) (it was after 2 pm in Belgium). Thanx for the offer to look into this.
Lycaon 08:38, 2 November 2005 (UTC) - Part of the VN problem is that the discussion about it is split between several archives and UtherSRG's talk page where Lycaon has linked to. Then there's the issue of dead links from mainpages that should go to the general discussion on languages which has since been archived so the links don't work anymore. Should we merge the bits and pieces somewhere? It seems all discussion has just been archived away. Wikispezi 03:59, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
Channa authors
editHi Open2universe, I currently add all valid Channa species (Pisces) to the wikispecies. Lycaon told me that you would add describers to the wikiXXX. Do you have any priorities? I would like to deliver you some information on the people who described the Channa. Some of them are famous (Linne, Bloch, Cuvier, Lacepede, Hamilton, Steindachner) some are unknown. What in detail information would you need? --Canelli 11:03, 9 November 2005 (UTC)Minor edit by UtherSRG (talk).
Birds
editIt's hard work, though. Motacilla flava - 1 species? 3? 12? How are we to know if the experts are still arguing?
What do you think of my Template:Disputed and Category:Disputed taxa - good idea or not? If good should it be subdivided now before we end up with a category with 100,000 entries?--Keith Edkins 20:46, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
Ucucha
editHi, happy new year to you too. Ucucha is 'on leave' until 7th January, but I'm sure once he is back he'll be able to help you with the taxon authorities.
Spreadsheet
editThere's a release 2 here which may be of interest: [1]
As well as now handling multiple interwiki links (see the note on Macro2) and images, the main change is that the "output" is now created as another worksheet in the Excel document. Then another macro (ctrl-d) hoicks out alternately the http address and the content for it into the clipboard. With the spreadsheet and IE open side-by-side and a long succession of ctrl-d ctrl-v (and using alt-s for Save Page); if the Wiki is running well I can peak at 10 taxa / minute and sustain about 7. Faster than permitted bot speed - maybe I ought to register myself as a bot!--Keith Edkins 12:24, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Admin again
editCould you please consider nominating yourself for adminship once again? You are a very good contributor, with thousands of edits. I think you have enough experience now to be an admin. Furthermore, we need some more admins. Benedikt and Geni are pretty inactive now, as are UtherSRG and I (on Wikispecies) (I like it better to write on Wikipedia, in fact). Lycaon is still very active, but if he isn't there vandals can't be stopped. So please, please become an admin! Ucucha (talk) 15:35, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
Gender of Eudynamys
editDo you have a source for asserting its femininity? According to [2] David and Gosselin (2002b) established that Eudynamys is masculine. (I don't think the primary source: David, N., and M. Gosselin. 2002. The grammatical gender of avian genera. Bull B.O.C. 122:257-282. has a web presence).--Keith Edkins (Talk) 13:55, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Moverton activities
editOn another subject, do you have any thoughts on the inserts being made by Moverton? He seems to be creating family-group and gender-group entries from some list of animal taxa in alphabetical order with just type and reference, regardless of whether the higher taxa have reached them yet - or indeed whether they are currently in use (eg Alligatoridae, Ailuridae are not needed). Should we politely request him to desist?--Keith Edkins (Talk) 13:55, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

RE: Any other photos?
editThanks for the encouraging words. I think that Lycaon is being a bit heavy-handed. My first impression is that wikispecies is not as friendly/open as wikipedia.
photos?
I'll have to look around.

Templates and performance
editI can't say I've noticed it making any difference. It's hard to tell, with the perfomance of the whole wiki cluster being as flakey as it is :-( Keith Edkins (Talk) 19:09, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
Recent vandalism
editHi there, I'm lightdarkness from the English Wikipedia. There was a small attack of vandalism late last night, which I was granted temporary sysop on this wiki to handle. I've outlined what happend on the Village Pump. Just a few moments ago, the vandal found my screenname, and instant messaged me several demands. As a result of this, m:User:SuiSui again temporarily sysop'd me to combat the vandalism. It hasn't happend on as large of a scale, but I'll stick around for a bit longer to ensure they have stopped.
Any questions, I can be reached on my english wikipedia talk page, located here. --Lightdarkness 01:03, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks, but you made in wrong place... :) Another question: exist Canis lupus familiaris (and their redirect, dog), i can create cão (portuguese)? --Slade 18:41, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, I think I put it in the correct place now. Do not create the redirect cão. The redirect dog should not be there either. Open2universe 19:09, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Common / vernacular names
edit(My english is very bad. I prefear write in french. If it is a problem, I will try in english).
Do I continue or not ??? I want to make the Tinamiformes.

Vandal-only impersonator accounts
editHiya! I know it's an odd request, coming from an IP and all, but if you wouldn't mind, the user accounts User:Kylu and User:RadioKirk are imposters of users by the same name on en.wikipedia, and Kylu (the real one) would greatly appreciate it if you'd change the block from 1 year to indefinite. CommonsTicker: new version, new features
editHello. A new version of CommonsTicker will be rolled out soon (probably tomorrow). Please have an eye on what the bot is doing, and report any problems to m:User_talk:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker. Some of the changes are:
- the ticker can now post warnings to the talk page of articles that are using "endangered" images. This is not enabled per default, and you can select for which namespaces it is done. If you want this feature, please request it at m:User:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker#Change_Requests.
- in append mode, there are now three empty template parameters: status, editor, and notic. The ticker does not use them itself, but you can use them in the TickerEntry template, for example to strike through entries that have been fixed. en:wikinews has already been using this for a while now.
- if the ticker fails to post an update, a warning is posted to your and the ticker's talk page. In append mode, the ticker will also re-try to post the update on the next pass. Until now, failed updates where simply ignored.
- edit summaries become a bit more informative.
I hope these changes will help to make CommonsTicker more used and more useful.
On a related note: you may have noticed that on long pages, entries near the bottom of the page are sometimes not expanded but rendered just as TickerEntry or similar. This is due to a new limit to template expansion - see bugzilla:7005. To avoid it, try to keep the page short and/or try to simplify the TickerEntry template.
This message was posted automatically by the CommonsTicker bot. For feedback and discussion, please go to meta:User talk:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker -- CommonsTicker 23:22, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Failed Ticker Updates
editHi - the history looks OK to me. "reposting previously failed update" means that during the previous run, saving the updated page failed - why exactly I can't tell, maybe it just got a slow server. The new version of CommonsTicker will retry posting during the next run, which is what you are seeing, while the old version just discarded the update. "1 replaced" is perfectly normal btw: it's a summary of the update (one image was reported as having been replaced). -- de:Benutzer:Duesentrieb 08:09, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Replying to your question
editHi! On your message at Meta... Interwikitmp-grp
here is not behaving badly, I just haven't ported in all the templates that are part of the standard support tool kit. Only so many hours in the day, and what I did bring over the weekend is a good start, and things are evolving such that a few documentation files and a see also template aren't ready yet to be ported being under revision. The real 'Mess' is on Wikinews. see this on WikiNews... which has a similar set of missing templates along with Wikiversity.
Insofar as what I'm doing, is 'Playing Santa'. Basically, I got a little tired of trying to do simple things on the sister project's and finding out that even what should be commonplace Meta and en.wp templates and category's were more often than not, totally missing and unavailable. Since we're all volunteer's, I find this offensive and a waste of our precious free time. So I'm doing something about spreading the wealth of workhorse templates like Lts
, Lcs
, and such (see: template talk:Cl, and inline utility calls like W:template:WD, W:template:W2 (a whole family, with nice well behaved pipetricked presentations, defaults to omit and hide 'w:', 'b:', 'q:' and most often, 'commons:' (W2c
.
The current 'tagged and ported somewhere' list is under w:category:Interwiki utility templates, and anything set off by sorting to '!' is part of the management system to allow maintenance and control of same, including any support templates needed to make the documentation be letter for letter identical sister to sister, and of course the establishing links to all the other sister's... some of which are just red links here now... Your 'Mess', as it were, if I can steal the term. In the meantime, w:template:Interwikitmp-grp usage and especially w:template:Interwikitmp-grpNN usage will give you a little more depth on the overall scheme, though it is being revised severely. There are also a dozen or so listed therein that aren't properly universal, but shared with the commons, so the LEFT... series, the 911, the Middle Ages templates, et al, don't really belong to the interwiki set, in a global sense of utility. OTOH, do as being common to that sister.
With a common toolset category to compare, and a link to establish an equal name, porting new tools in is mostly a matter of cut, follow the link, and paste. I'm cataloging exceptions (e.g. the Cat
is used in at least two and I think three major different ways, with one minor variant of one flavor. The Meta Lts is a bit more sophisticated than the en.wp version, which being heavily used, need promongulated, and comment before normalizing, and such exceptions need handling. I'd have updated more of your redlinks, but some sister's common.css files needed a rewrite of the tagging templates in the array, and we took the opportunity to also shrink the template size and space needs. So if W:template:interwikitmp-grp looks different than commons:template:interwikitmp-grp, wikt:template:interwikitmp-grpor the one here, that's why... things are in mid-change and one needs to keep up RL commitments too! Frankly, I was so burned out that today I avoided the wiki's until late afternoon, then proceded to loose half a dozen edits before saving out of a multitab browser. Shit happens, but it doesn't help to inadvertantly hit the wrong hotkey! (Firefox— it should not have a key to kill itself!) In the meantime, the only one's aware of the 'Mess' are admin types that patrol new pages, and most of you are smart enough to ask as you did. Once the pass=2 changes are stablized, there will be a write-up on Meta, with some discussion with the Communications committee.
So the system will also document those with a local tag on the unusual use w:interwikitmp-grp ineligible, and concurrently, on the common version, provide links to an aliased name that will be common to all sister's (in this case, Cat becomes CAT, as Tl
becomes the universal flavor TL
, since Wiktionary used the Tl/tl variants for their own needs, which is alas very commonly used. Some minor variant uses have been cleared so all sister's are the same syntax, others, are more trouble than it's worth, so the aliasing is used.) But in the final analysis, this is a mission to spread useful things to needy volunteers, who can feel empowered when doing work off their home wiki. With at least one category name in common, they will also have a place to start if they need category information.
Hope that's all clear. Best regards. // FrankB 08:37, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
Re: Begonia setulosopeltata page
editThanks for your help. I should have waited for your reply. Problematic Taxon Authority Koch
editHi Open2universe. I stumbled upon a certain Mr. Koch. There are 4 Koch's on our Taxon Authorities list. We got Carl Ludwig Koch (1778-1857), Cathrin Koch, Karl Koch (1809-1879) and Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch (1771-1849). Other than these English wikipedia knows a en:Ludwig Carl Christian Koch, German entomologist (November 8, 1825 - November 1, 1908).
Not knowing these things I added data to Ludwig Carl Christian Koch, which is probably wrong. I tried to create order in this mess, but I'm pretty much stuck. Perhaps you feel brave enough to create the necessary order? (Note: Karl and Carl is virtually the same name).
The name {Koch) is widely used as taxonomist. --Kempm 12:16, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

editFeel free to put me to work. If you just make a list of links I'll change them for you. Got nothing better to do ;) --Kempm 12:48, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
I think we got them all. In the big genus Iris you need to check 3 species though that had double entries, I removed the links that were pointing to the 'wrong' card, but better that you check it: Iris grossheimii, Iris paradoxa and Iris pseudocaucasica --Kempm 15:42, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
Terns
editHi Open2universe - seeing you started the Sterna and Sterninae pages, thought I'd best mention to you: these need a lot of work following recent reclassification. First, they are now treated as a family Sternidae, no longer a subfamily Sterninae in Laridae; second, the big genus Sterna has been split up into several genera (Gelochelidon, Hydroprogne, Onychoprion, Sterna, Sternula, Thalasseus). I've added the new genera to the Sterninae page, but have a nasty suspicion the rest will involve some fairly complex re-arranging work, I'm not 100% certain how to proceed. Primary reference: Bridge, E. S., Jones, A. W., & Baker, A. J. (2005). IPNI Authors
editI was able to retrieve the whole list of IPNI authors (this one is A-E), and format it in a way we can use it. I had to break up the file, because it was too big for Wiki though. I got the whole file on my PC. If you want me to add the other parts, then let me know, because I'm not 100% sure you want a chunk like this. Also if I need to format it in another way, I think I can do that. I added one field compared to your list, which is 'source:IPNI'
I also have a big list from Fungorum, but this one needs a lot more formatting, because they are using columns. If you want though I can try compile one full list, from IPNI and Fungorum. Maybe there are other sources out there, from where I can retrieve this. If needed we can chunk files up per letter of the alphabet. --Kempm 12:42, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- Awesome. It is a large list. I like adding the source. Even with IPNI, I have noticed ITIS and others may have different abbreviations for botanists. I have a small concern that we would be adding authorities where we may never have a link. We already have over 2,500 authorities with pages! Open2universe 01:34, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
- Are you sure this doesn't violate copyright? Ucucha (talk) 07:01, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hummm copyright on names? The only possible copyright that I see is the name IPNI. The abbreviations used will mostly be the ones that were already used in literature, and there cannot be copyright on that, since we are already using that on other pages? Plus it was the idea of this convention to give credit to the person who named the species, and for others to know who published this, so they might be able to contact that person.
- Here is a link to their copyright statement IPNI Copyright Open2universe 03:07, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
- Do you want me to create a full listing with Fungorum and IPNI names Open2Universe? I need to add one ';' on every line to distinguish between lines, so that needs manual intervention, and would take a couple of hours. Than I can sort the whole listing. There will be double entries though, but I can delete lines where Firstname + Surname are the same or something like that. One difference between IPNI and Fungorum I noticed is that the abbreviation IPNI uses is like: A.C.Gardner, while Fungorum uses A.C. Gardner (with a space)
- Indeed different sources use different abbreviations, quite normal is to just use the surname. This runs into trouble for a site like wikipedia obviously, forcing us to make decisions of our own. And I really think we need to make decisions like that, to avoid making disambiguation pages for every name.
- Well let me know if you want me to spend some time on this, and then I'll probably break the file up per letter? Unless Ucucha gives me a clue on copyvio :) --Kempm 08:04, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
- I think perhaps we should wait. There is plenty of other work to do at the moment. Thanks for looking into it. Open2universe 03:07, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
- BTW, perhaps it is possible to use a bot to create redirects and author pages with this? What a bot can maybe do is: Abbreviation - Does page exist? No - Then create page - #REDIRECT Full name - Does Full name exist or maybe Author:Full name? No - Then create Author page. I can format the file in almost any way a bot wants it. --Kempm 08:26, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Of course, they can't claim copyright on the names themselves, but they do have copyright on the database. I don't know exactly how the legal situation is, but I think you should at least be very careful. Ucucha (talk) 16:24, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

CommonsTicker: Ticker Trouble
editHello
As you may have noticed, there have been some problems with CommonsTicker lately:
- first, the toolserver was down. After it was back up, we had to wait for fresh database dumps.
- also, many updates where failing because ticker pages where growing too large. Updates that went through half-way somtimes also caused entries to be posted multiple times, making the problem worse.
- when I tried to improve performance, I introduced a bug that caused the ticker to post trash sometimes. I disabled the ticker again when I was told about it, and I have fixed all effected pages yesterday (I hope I didn't miss any).
To sort this out completely, I have to rewrite parts of CommonsTicker. For now, I will enable the ticker again for most wikis, but not for the ones that where having most trouble - namely de-wikipedia, en-wikinews, eo-wikipedia, es-wikipedia, fr-wikipedia, ja-wikipedia, ru-wikipedia, simple-wikipedia and zh-wikipedia. I'll have to investigate those more closely.
So please keep an eye on CommonsTicker in the next days - if there is any more trouble, please tell me, preferrably on meta:User_talk:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker.

interwikis
editHello,
the new way in which interwikis work is problematic. Almost every article I visited today contains links that aren't interpreted correctly. Is there a possibility to correct this automatically, e.g. replace every de:xyz en:xy by VN|de:xyz|en:xyz and so on? But maybe you already know about this problem ...
Sisterwiki
editHi, I don't know where to ask this so I just ask you, maybe you can put this question to the correct place. I tried to add
Sisterheader
Sistercommons| |:Colostethus flotator
Sisterend
(in brackets) to Colostethus flotator but it didn't work. Are those Templates missing? Teebeutel 22:16, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
CommonsTicker: CommonsTicker, The Next Generation
editI am currently testing a new version of CommonsTicker (dubbed CommonsTicker NG) on the german Wikipedia - problems with ticker pages growing too large made a partial rewrite necessary. Most changes are "under the hood", the larges change for users is in the way the ticker page is structured and updated:
CommonsTicker will now create a subpage for each day, and include this as a template on the ticker page. New entries for a given day are added to the respective subpage without modifying existing entries on that subpage. Old subpages (sections) are removed automatically from the main ticker page - per default, 7 sections are kept (days for which there are no entries are not counted). Please check that your ticker page has both start- and end-markers for the region where CommonsTicker should post (see m:User:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker#Ticker_Page); everything between the markers will be replaced. If the markers are missing, the entire page is replaced.
When I have finished testing CommonsTicker NG, I will activate the new version on the wikis where CommonsTicker is currently disabled due to problems with page size (the large projects I mentioned in the last announcement). When all goes well, I will start to switch other wikis to NG one by one, as seems convenient. If you want the new version soon, or you don't want it yet for some reason, please tell me about it on m:User:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker#Change_Requests.
