Pantala flavescens

edit

Andrew: I see you replaced my image with a "better" one. Depends on what you mean by better! Your one looks nicer, but my one shows the wing venation clearly, the fine details of which are most important for identification! What should we do? Stho002 23:04, 30 June 2009 (UTC) On second thoughts, maybe your one is better, as I can see the venation OK on one side when I enlarge the image. Stho002 23:20, 30 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

It might be a good idea in future to discuss in advance the replacement of any of my images, since I am probably a better judge than you on how IDENTIFIABLE a species is from an image. In this case, however, I am happy to accept the replacement. Stho002 03:03, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

How's that? I just did the formatting by hand instead expanding templates and looking up en.wp's common.css and that but it's close. Rocket000 15:12, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

In taxonomy: subspecies, not varieties

edit

Hi, a taxonomist should use the term subspecies and left the terminus varieties for those who are interested in gardening. I was wrong, because I found the list of subspecies and overlooked the terminus ‘varieties’. Thank you. tea ≈Dl 18:14, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: Welcome

Thank you for your welcome, I am from Spain in the old Europe, and English is not my mother tongue, so, please, be patient with me. I have a degree in biologist (University of Granada, if you don't know it, is one of the most ancient in Europe, established in 1531). I don't know if will be usefull here but, at the moment, I will use this wiki as a reference for me.--Fanattiq 10:21, 4 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Andrew,

I'm anxious about the people who leave Wiki. After Lycaon and Alan Accassidy now have Mariusm left Wiki. Is the domination of Stephen Thorpe those lost worth? I know that some other people want to leave wiki allso.

Xanthopimpla authorship

edit

Andrew, I actually had those species authorships correct! The authors of a taxon don't have to be the authors of the article - you need to check INSIDE the article! Stho002 06:19, 11 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

==Eukaryota== (copy from Village Pump)

I just reverted user:Stho002s revisions to the Eukaryota page as there was no discussion that I could find regarding whether or not the new 2 clade structure, just published this year, has actually overturned the years of contention on the taxonomy and phylogeny of the group. I would have looked to the talk page and posted my concerns there but I see in my watchlist the the entire page was deleted in the same overhall by the same editor with the resoning of "no longer relevant". This is completely against talk page policy and the page should be restored to allow discussion of what taxonomy to follow.--Kevmin 05:32, 25 July 2009 (UTC) I have just been able to post this comment after being temporarally blocked. I hope that I will receive a full hearing out of my concerns before actions are taken again.--Kevmin 05:34, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

  1. You could have had the courtesy to speak to me about it before acting! Not doing so is the very "sin" you accuse me of! Stho002 05:35, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
  2. If you had spoken to me first, I would have told you that the Wikispecies classification at these higher levels is in a huge inconsistent mess as it is, and I am trying to sort it out bit by bit Stho002 05:37, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
  3. you reverted my edit of that page back to an earlier edit BY ME! I think I know if my previous effort needs modifying or not! Stho002 05:38, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
  4. I blocked you as it looked like an attack by you on my edits! You came out of nowhere, and without a word of justification, immediately started to revert my edits Stho002 05:39, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bot running again

edit

Hello OhanaUnited,
sorry for letting you wait for so long before restarting the bot. It's just better to wait some time between two full loops, so that there are more changes to do; more effective this way. But now my bot is running again :-)

For the future I plan to loop over newly created pages every day (like for Wikipedia); interwiki linking should be more effective that way. --- Kind regards, Melancholie 05:19, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

VN template

edit

Ok, I wasn't sure what you were talking about. I do see one issue though, gil (Gilbertese) is not defined in MediaWiki (it's in the Incubator though), so #language: won't convert it. Easy enough to fix... if it wasn't for how poorly this template was written. Why does {{VN}} even use templates like {{En}} and {{Gil}}? Is it so people can hide certain translations through custom CSS? I doubt anyone would do that. Also, does anyone even use the inline or infobox parameters? Don't we want all VN boxes the same? The template is overly complex. I think I'll make a new version. I got a ton of stuff back on Commons (e.g. see commons:Template:VN and this page). I'll see what might be useful to bring over or maybe I'll just make something new. The question is what exactly do we need the template to be able to do? Right now, it has too much unused stuff in it I think. Rocket000 03:19, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well then, I'll need to start spending more time over here with templates. ;) Check out the code of VN on Commons: [1]. Now, our format here is obviously different but the templates are used in exactly the same way. Originally, I had it making 3 columns too. I got it to wrap lines correctly and all that so it could work here if we wanted columns. I thought it made it look nice and it matched {{SN}}, which is normally used along side of it (example), but the columns had to go when we started adding it to pages like commons:Aves. It took up the whole screen for some people. Even now, there's an option to make it even more compact (example). We have more space here, so we have more options. Commons' VN has been used 1000s of times and I never had to add a language yet (but I got bigger and better lists if needed). The auto sort feature is nice too. We can put the languages in any order and they always show up alphabetized by language name, not code. That way you get the best of both worlds. The code can be alphabetized by language code so you don't need to know what they mean (and where those non-Latin characters fit in), but it still displays in the best-looking way.
Doing away with hard-coded English headers would be nice too. On the Commons template, "Vernacular names" (and other things) is auto-translated based on the user's interface. For example, here's what French users see. And German, Spanish, etc.
Anyway, there's lots of possibilities. I'll come up with something in a day or two. Give me ideas and I'll try and implement them. Rocket000 05:20, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Of course, I didn't mean we should use that format. I agree the Aves page looks a little overcrowded. Like I said, originally it wasn't like that but people started to complain that the 3-column format took up their whole screen. Here we have lots more room. Now that I finished up some template work on Commons, I'll start working on it. Rocket000 03:23, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Do we want them in alphabetized by language code or language name? Either way, it will not affect the usage, only the display. Meaning that the order the user puts them in doesn't matter. Personally, I think by name looks the best and makes finding your language easier if you don't know the codes. Besides, some codes are MediaWiki only. E.g. "zh-min-nan" which is simply "nan" in ISO format. Rocket000 03:44, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I know. :) I was asking if we want to keep it that way. Here's my new version which puts them in order by name. I discovered there were a couple invalid (made up) language codes being used in the current version. Namely, {{Ck}}, {{Nu}}, and {{Tv}} (all redirects to valid ISO codes now). So I need to fix these first. Rocket000 17:52, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Done :-) Let me know if there's any further improvements you'd like to see. (Or any other templates that need work.) Rocket000 21:13, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, hopefully we won't get anymore editprotected requests to add languages, but I'm sure at some point in the future someone will want to use some language not currently in there. There's already several represented in Incubator that I didn't include (for performance reasons; there's way way too many languages and variants out there to include them all, some don't even have ISO codes yet). I actively maintain several templates and lists that involve language codes/translations so I stay updated and track what codes are actually in use. I do this by watching for MediaWiki code changes, new interface translations (or new non-Incubator Wikipedias), and any actual use of a language on Meta, Commons, or Species. For example, gil was a code I never saw before (it's not defined anywhere in MediaWiki), so now that's incorporated in most my lists. It's very rare for new ones to pop up like that, however, I will preemptively add any that I think may be used in the future (which I'm going to do pretty soon). In other words, I'll be keeping it updated so you don't really need to watch that talk page anymore. :-) Rocket000 20:30, 26 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

florawiki.org

Hi Andrew!

Did You find my answer for your question? What do You think about it? I raised the question discuss page of Project animals and Project plants on english Wikipedia, but no answers and intrests. What do You think, why? Is a bad idea identifying organisms by morphological data? Before I fill in some data on florawiki, I need some people who help me find the fundamentals. Best regards! Adding Armenian to languages template

edit

Hi Andrew,
Could you please add the link to the Armenian Main Page on Wikispecies to the languages template? Here's the link: Հայերեն. Thank you! Chaojoker 08:15, 15 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Main Page is Գլխավոր Էջ, and Armenian is Հայերեն in Armenian (just as the above link). Thanks :) Chaojoker 06:22, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the addition. However, guess I forgot to tell you how the name of the language actually sounds, which is "hayeren", so it would probably be more [English] alphabetically correct to have it between Galego and Hebrew. Chaojoker 05:41, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Not sure

And what about this and Rhantus elisabethae, Kakadudessus tomweiri? Ark (talk page) 08:55, 17 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

You're right, I'll try. Thanks :) About image: FF and Opera doesn't see it, but downloaded file looks ok (in Irfanview). Ark (talk page) 20:51, 17 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Main Page draft

edit

Hello, following our discussion I made a rough draft for the Main Page -- User:Mariusm/MainPage1, and I need some feedback from you. It is not by all means a final version. Mariusm 11:05, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Added ZooKeys and made some cosmetic changes.
I can make the "species of the week" a template, so we need to edit the template and not the main page every time we change the species. Mariusm 18:00, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Created a template: Template:Species of the week, so as not to edit the Main Page every time a species is changed.
Changed the "Species of the week" to Polar Bear. Mariusm 10:18, 6 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Created template:MP pictures. Mariusm 10:01, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

re: Holotype

edit

OK, that's no problem – since nowe I'll be placing information about the holotype under "Name" section, as you recommended. But I've been thinking that's a good idea to point that specimen on the image is the holotype and not non-holotype individual. :) Regards, Ag.Ent talk 13:47, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dear OhanaUnited, i just found a problem with the article Equus onager and asked a question about it on the page Talk:Equus onager. Do you know anything about this? I'm new to wikispecies, but can do alot because i work on the Dutch Wiki for almost 2 years now. But i don't know any place where i can submit this page for deletion.

I ask this from you because i looked up 3 other users wich worked on the page, but they haven't done anything on wikispecies this year, so i won't expect any answers from them soon. And I contacted 2 other users on they're talk pages but they don't respond.

Thanks in forward, --Kennyannydenny 10:12, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Allotinus (Allotinus)

edit

Ohana,

I have a problem with Allotinus (Allotinus). If I add a species to Allotinus (Allotinus) confirm the templates its ok. But when I add the species Allotinus (Allotinus) otsukai there goes some thing wrong. I get then Allotinus otsukai and not Allotinus (Allotinus) otsukai. Do you know how this come? I see others have the same problem like Arachn0. I have fixed but its extra work. If I add a species with a subgenus i get the species without the subgenus. I have to use the button MOVE for a correct contribution. If i add a subspecies i get the correct page.
