- Lectotype species: Meredithia microphylla (J.Agardh) J.Agardh
- Type designated in F.Schmitz & Hauptfleisch (1887: 365) Gigartinaceae. In: Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien.
- Named for Louisa Anne Meredith (1812-1895), born in Pembrokeshire, Wales and who emigrated to Tasmania.
