- Typus: J.W.K. Moritz 468 (Holotypus: B [destroyed; monochrome photocopy in F /F0BN000841(GBIF1, GBIF2, JSTOR)/]; Lectotypus: BM [BM000624105(GBIF, JSTOR), designated by Tayor & Jardim 2020: 133]; ⧼Isolectotypi⧽: BM [BM000611007(GBIF, JSTOR)], F [V0069169F (606740)(GBIF, JSTOR), fragm. ex B]).
- Type locality: Venezuela. Guardia de San Agustín prope Caripe.
Synonymy edit
- Taylor (2012) placed Faramea pauciflora Dwyer (type collected in Panama) under F. spathacea, but she later reinstated the former name in 2020.
- Delprete & Cortés-B. (2015) sink Faramea occidentalis subsp. lonchocalyx Steyerm. (type collected in Ecuador) under F. spathacea, but Taylor (2018) places the former under F. occidentalis (L.) A.Rich., recognizing no infraspecific taxon.

Notes edit
- Condit (2019) claims that this species also occurs in Costa Rica, Panama, Guyana, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador.
- Taylor (2012) cited G. Herrera C. & E. Madrigal 2556, which is currently treated as type of Faramea grayumiana C.M.Taylor, collected from Costa Rica and T.B. Croat 27575, the type of F. pauciflora, collected in Panama.
- On "Colombian" occurrences:
- As paratypes of this species, Standley (1936) cited two Colombian collections, viz. Schlim 531 and Funck s.n. (collected in 1843, without further locality; deposited in P [P03907606(GBIF)]). The former was later described as Faramea pseudospathacea by Steyermark (1967) and the locality of the latter is questioned by Taylor (2020).
- Mendoza et al. (2004) cited J. Espina 3621 (collected in Ensenada de Utria National Natural Park, Chocó, 0–100 m, 18 April 1990; deposited in MO-1531076 (3854406)(GBIF); also in FMB-58169(GBIF)), but it was re-determined with Faramea monsalveae C.M.Taylor in 2004.
- Delprete & Cortés-B. (2015) cited W.G. Vargas 6192 (collected in Norcasia, Caldas, alt. 400–600 m, 13–31 July 1999; deposited in MO-1533723 (5757749)(GBIF); also in HUA 117260), but it was re-determined with Faramea grayumiana in 2020.
