Name

Aegeococcus anagnostidisi D. Konstantinou & S. Gkelis, 2021

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to Konstantinos Anagnostidis (1924-1994), a Greek university professor, whose pioneer work on cyanobacterial diversity has paved the way for modern cyanobacterial taxonomy.

  • Type locality: Overhang of the sublittoral zone in Porto Valitsa, Kassandra, Chalkidiki Peninsula, Greece (39.951◦ N, 23.685◦ E), collected on October 10, 2014 at a depth of 21 m; found to live in association with the sponge Axinella damicornis (Esper, 1794).

Description

edit

Cells solitary or irregularly grouped in clusters. Cells cylindrical with rounded ends, usually three times longer (1.17–4.42 μm) than wide (0.6–1.3 μm), with thin slightly distinct or indistinct mucilage layer. Cells with homogenous or finely granulated content, mostly pinkish.
