Currently, FishBase lists 12 valid species of Thoracochromis; Catalog of Fishes (6 April 2015 update) lists only three, plus a synonym.
Weirdly, Catalog of Fishes recognizes Thoracochromis as currently valid, but lists its type species (Paratilapia wingatii Boulenger 1902) under Haplochromis, not under Thoracochromis. MKOliver (talk) 12:24, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
