Etymology: The specific epithet refers to Professor Kaarina Sivonen (University of Helsinki) to honor her long and valuable contribution to cyanobacterial research.

Description: Thallus pinkish, composed of fasciculated filaments (rarely solitary filaments) attached to the substratum. Filaments long with a single trichome per sheath, unbranched, straight to curved. Sheaths colorless, thin, and slightly distinct. Trichomes slightly constricted at the cross walls. Hormogonia rare. Cells longer than wide to isodiametric, 0.89–1.96 μm in length and 0.72–1.09 μm in width. Thylakoids (two to three) arranged peripherally. End cells rounded.
