The classification of this orchid species was published by John Lindley (1799-1865) in Bot. Reg. (1843) Misc. 14. as Lycaste cristata. The species was reclassified to Paphinia in ???? by ????. Paphinia cristata is distributed Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Surinam, French Guiana and Trinidad at altitudes up to 1000m.
